In transcervical resection of the endometrium (TCRE), a loop electrode is used to excise the endometrium and the superficial myometrium. 

The advantages of TCRE are that it enables histological assessment of excised endometrium and also enables submucous fibroids and polyps to be excised at the same time if present.

The uterine distension medium used during TCRE must be electrolyte-free, and this increases the risk of hyponatraemia if excess fluid is absorbed into the circulation during the procedure.

A further disadvantage of TCRE is that it is associated with a higher risk of uterine perforation and excessive bleeding than other endometrial ablation techniques.
