Identical twins come from one fertilized egg that splits early in the pregnancy and develops into more than one fetus. The fetuses share the same placenta and the same genetic material. That is why they are identical having the same hair color, eye color, sex, and blood type). Multiple pregnancies are diagnosed early by an ultrasound.

All multiple pregnancies are considered high risk. You can expect to see your obstetrician and have ultrasound scans more often. 

There is a higher likelihood for you to get the following: high blood pressure, pre-clampsia, eclampsia, anaemia, gestational diabetes, placenta praevia, excessive vomiting, heartburn, shortness of breath, post-partum haemorrhage and pelvic pain. 

Babies are at increased risk of preterm birth, failure to grow, birth defect or death of one or more fetus. 

Ensure that you are having enough rest, sleep, balanced nutrition, calories and vitamins. 

The chances of needing a C-section are greater. The decision generally will be based on the positioning of the babies. If the babies are headfirst, there is a greater chance that you may be able to deliver them vaginally. 

Some doctors feel more comfortable than others in delivering twins vaginally, especially if first baby is head first and the second is breech (feet first). 

Epidural is recommended for labour or C-Section
