Sometimes it is necessary to guide the baby's head along the birth canal using VACUUM EXTRACTOR (soft plastic cup) applied to the baby's head. The latter stays in place by suction.
The method is sometimes used during Fetal distress, prolonged second stage of labour, a delay of delivery due to the baby's position or the mother is too tired to push.
Studies have shown that assisting with delivery this way does not pose any greater risk to the mother or the baby than a C-section. When applied properly, vacuum delivery would very rarely cause any permanent injury to the baby.
A vacuum delivery may leave a swelling of the scalp, caput; which usually disappears in 2-3 days
